March Birthstone: Aquamarine

Aquamarine, Silver, Hallamrked

I love aquamarine! I have a beautiful pale aquamarine ring that I made a few years ago, that I loved so much I kept - perks of the job eh?! As a March-born person, aquamarine is my birthstone. To me its connection to the water is a powerful one. The colour is incredible and its like staring into the clearest, most crystal blue sea. They often vary in colour. Depending on the hue and tone of the gemstone they range from light blue to dark blue, or even green with blue overtones.

Aquamarine is part of the beryl family, along with the May birthstone emerald. Not only the birthstone for the zodiac sign Pisces, it is also the gemstone for the 19th wedding anniversary, or can be the perfect “something blue” to be worn by a bride on her wedding day. The pale blueish green colour comes from iron, unlike the emerald which gets its colouring from chromium. It is rated 7.5-8 on the Moh’s scale of hardiness, making it a durable gemstone for all types of jewellery and can be worn everyday without risk of damage.

The name aquamarine derives from Latin Aqua marina, which translates as ‘seawater’. According to old legends, the aquamarine changed colour to reveal truths and false, friends or foe, and was seen to bring well-being, good memory and clairvoyance. It is supposed to offer protection from evil and is also said to bring love and affection back into a failing relationship. A true symbol of honesty, loyalty and beauty.

Spiritually the aquamarine is a strong contender. Thought to be seen to channel medium qualities and clairvoyance by encouraging spiritual growth and foresight. Being able to channel into these with a dynamic and moral honesty will help you in finding consistently successful goals.

I find the aquamarine a pragmatic stone. When I look at it, it brings a sense of calm, similar to the feeling I get when I’m standing on the shore listening to gentle waves lapping at the waters edge. Historically sailors believed that aquamarine gemstones had a calming effect on the ocean. When comforted with the dangers of the sea, many sailors welcomed this beautiful gemstone as a symbol of luck and good fortune. It is an emotionally calming stone that brings a light heartedness and happy disposition. The peace of mind helps to irradicate confusion and ultimately putting you in the mindset to get things done in a smooth and orderly manor, as well as bringing closure to unfinished business.

The aquamarine symbolises youth and spirit of hope. Many people associate it with healing properties, faithfulness and lasting love. It is also good for eyesight (short or long), and in the case of an infection of the eye can be placed on the eyelids in the evenings. It can also be worn constantly on the body, working with the pituitary gland to balance hormones, growth and blood pressure. It also helps to calm the immune system and works particularly well for hay-fever. It helps to ease autoimmune diseases and other allergies.
