How to find your ring size

So, you’re thinking about buying a ring (congratulations, one can never have too many rings!), but you’re not sure of your ring size. Here are some handy tips on how to go about this…
On the website I have a ring advice blurb, however, I thought I’d go a little further in-depth to help you decide which size is the best for you. Whether you are interested in stacking rings, or possibly investing in something with a bit more of an elaborate design, there are a couple of things to think about first.
I’d just like to add at this point that ring sizing is incredibly important if you are sizing for an investment ring. These rings are made to order and cannot be returned or exchanged. In most cases resizing isn’t too much of a problem, but I really like to avoid it where possible. If you are sizing your own finger please be as accurate as you can and follow the guidelines below.
Let’s start with the basics: Do you have a ring that fits perfectly on the finger you would like the new ring for? If so, bring this to me and I can size it. If you don’t live close to me then any jeweller/jewellery shop will have a ring mandrel. This is a ring sizing stick with the letters on the side. This will give you an accurate ring size. I use a sizing system called the Wheatsheaf, so if you do go to a jeweller for sizing please ask them what method they are using to size the ring, and I can convert it this end for you.
An alternative is to get hold of a set of ring sizers. These are calibrated sized rings that you can try on (each marked with a letter). When choosing your ring size it is important to consider how the ring slides over the knuckle, you don’t want it to be too tight, nor too loose. The aim is to have a sort of ‘pop’ when it slides over. The difficulty with knuckles is that they are often a bit bigger than the finger below, causing the ring can swivel around, however it’s most important to make a close fit over the knuckle otherwise it will fall off!
Where can I find ring sizers? Well, there are two options for you here:
1: I have sets at the workshop so I can help you there. For my clients who are commissioning rings, or who are having remodels designed, part of the available service is to have a set of sizers posted to your home, where you can size your finger and return them with the enclosed sheet completed.
2: I sell the little sizing strips here (link to follow). These are a great way to size your fingers and then you have a ring sizer to hand should you need it in the future.
When sizing if you feel that your part way between two sizes, that is fine, I can make you a half size. Crazy fact: For most sizes there is only 1mm difference in circumference, so it is important to be as specific as possible.
The other option is using a print out sheet, which can be found here. You simply print it out and put a ring you already own that fits that finger over the top, finding the closest size that matches (remembering the 1mm sizing thing - this is why you need to be accurate).
If you are buying stacking rings and you get the size wrong this isn’t a problem, it just involves the faff of sending them back and changing them, so a mistake in this case isn’t too much to worry about. In this instance, the print out sheet will be best suited for the job of getting a good fit.
However, if you’re buying an investment ring and it’s being made to order it cannot be returned because it has been specifically made and personalised for you. Therefore, it is important to spend time getting the size right! Some ring designs will absolutely be fine to be altered and some won’t, so I really do like to get a good size fit first time. As I said before, I can size your finger for you from the workshop, or happily send a sizing pack out to you, so that it can be done from the comfort of your own home. In the past I have been known to size fingers from a photograph and got it right, so there are definitely a few options out there for you!
